Abigail never knew her mother, so her father is her world. Though she’s missed having a woman’s influence, she wants to grow up and be like her father–a veterinarian.
But then one summer it all changed.
It’s not what happens to you that counts, but how you deal with it. And Fred, as her dad calls her, deals with a lot.
Taking what her father and new faith has taught her, she uses her gifts of compassion and empathy to help a young girl in a desperate situation. But this time, it could cost her more than compassionate tears over an injured animal. It could cost her…her life!
“It’s obvious you’re not in tune to her needs. She’s a young girl who needs a woman in her life! A woman to help guide her into adulthood. Not this!” Turning to the sheriff and the inmates, she shrugged her shoulders. “Whatever this is! You won’t let me take her! You won’t date anybody! She’s told me herself that she wants a mother!”
“You just mind your own business! Any father in the state of Kansas worth his salt is not going to let his sister or anybody else raise his little girl! Now I’ve told you this before, Sherri. I’m tired of you telling me how I’m supposed to do my job, so butt out! You hear me?”
Normally I would remain silent when they argued over me, but today, Aunt Sherri was the maddest I’d ever seen her. Hearing her yelling at Daddy was burning my ears as my heart pounded in my chest. I covered my ears with my hands as I continued to watch them go at it until I just couldn’t take any more. Leaping from the porch, I ran to them. “Stop it! Just stop it!” I screamed as the sheriff and his deputies turned to walk back to their cruisers.
